What is MAO?

Monoamine Oxidase (MAO)
You may have heard or ready about the acronym called MAOI. This stands for 'monoamine oxidase inhibitor' and is to inhibit monoamine oxidase that is the primary enzyme within the body that breaks down the DMT compound. So by inhibiting these enzymes the DMT will remain in the body for a much longer period of time.

There are two classes of MAO; MAO-A and MAO-B. Inhibitors act differently on these classes of compounds, inhibitors that act on MAO-A are safer because they are reversible, which means they detach from the MAO-A within 36hrs.

Unlike MAO-B inhibitors that can take up to 2 weeks to be removed from the system, due to the cells requirement to synthesize new enzymes. MAOI’s are typically used to treat depression, Parkinson’s disease, Hodgkin’s lymphoma and others, and are contained within such drugs as Marplan, Moclobemide, Nardil, Procarbazine. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monoamine_oxidase_inhibitor

There are four main concerns associated with an MAOI:
1. Once the MAOI blocks the MAO enzyme it can let harmful tyramines and tryptamines into the blood stream, which can lead to serious cardiac or psychiatric emergencies. This means a special diet is required in order to remove potential toxins from being ingested into the body.

2. As there are two classes of MAO’s, it is important to know which inhibitor to ingest, know the effects on the body and ensure an appropriate diet is maintained throughout.

3. Interactions with other chemicals being taken, such as blood pressure medication, flu medication, MDMA, SSRI’s can increase the risk of serious issues or even death

4. MAOI's also have profound effects on the brain, which can be felt when taken. Be aware of the effects and how they may be similar or how they differ from other chemicals that you intake into your body.

Due to the way in which the MAOI works on the system it is extremely important to be aware of your diet and eliminate the intake of tryptamines (except for DMT) and especially tyramines. We have not previously raised a risk that tyramines have on the brain and secondary effects on the body, but they significantly impact the regulation of blood pressure, which under some situations can lead to serious issues that require hospitalisation and in extreme cases can lead to death.

Source of MAOI
In order to ingest the MAOI that targets MAO-A, it is safer to ingest a capsulated form of powdered Syrian Rue Seed.

You can quite easily purchase powdered Syrian Rue Seed via eBay and you will only require very small quantities.

Make sure you do your research before taking any MAOIs - they can be deadly.

Note: If you chose to take an MAOI together with DMT, you must understand the risks and manage them effectively - there have been reported deaths due to the use of MAOIs.

Method 2: Capsulating plant resin

Processing Resin from Mimosa Hostilis Bark Root (MHRB)
To find out what plant material you need to purchase, you can read the article for capsulating raw plant material- the first method.

The important part of taking DMT, no matter the method, is to get as much DMT into the blood stream as possible in one go. This method covers preparing a brew made from MHRB and then creating a resin that is powdered for capsulating, which you will ingest for the DMT journey. This method produces a much higher concentration of DMT within the capsule, as opposed to simply using raw plant material. Additionally, this method is much gentler on the stomach.

The method outlined below involves creating a resin over a couple of days and then filling capsules (you will need a thermos to store the brew in):

1. Blending
If you are not able to purchase the powdered inner root bark, the first thing you will need to do it blend the plant material. Mimosa Hostilis is very fibrous and splintery so you will want to get rid of the fiber. If you have a thermomix (setting 10 for 10 - 20 seconds - a few times over), they work great in being able to separate the fibrous material.

For Mimosa Hostilis, you should use about a handful of the root bark, or you can weigh out about 30grams. After blending keep all the plant material for brewing.

2. Brewing
DMT is a stable compound so place the plant material into a source pan and pour water into the pan until is just covers the plant material.

Bring the water to the boil and maintain it for about 5min, then pour the boiling water and plan material into a thermos.

Shake the thermos occasionally and each day pour the contents of the thermos into a source pan and boil the brew again. Once boiled pour the brew into the thermos and repeat this other a few days.

3. Creating a resin
After a few days strain the brew into a flat pan, the larger the pan the better in order to maximise the surface area for evaporation. Heat the pan over the stove to bring the liquid to a strong simmer, the purpose is to evaporate the liquid. Keep moving the liquid around in the pan to help it evaporate and to stop hot spots. After some time the liquid will almost be gone and you will be left with a sticky resin setting on the bottom of the pan.

You now want to dry the resin and material left on the bottom of the pan, so reduce the heat and continue to dry out the material, but make sure you don't burn it. Let the pan cool and then scrape all the dried resin from the bottom of the pan and put it into a container.

4. Grinding
You now will need to powder the material, so ideally use a mortar & pestle to grind the dried resin. It will grind quite quickly and will produce a nice fine powder.

Once you start seeing the powder, strain it into a container. Repeat this a number of times in order to get as much powder as you can.

5. Capsulating
In order to ingest the plant material, you must capsulate it. This will deliver it directly to your stomach and will not cause any discomfort if you otherwise try and swallow it, it will also help you manage the time before it takes effect.

The first thing you will need to purchase some empty capsules (size 00) from your local pharmacy or chemist, or via eBay.

The next thing you should do is find a container and label it with 'Mimosa Hostilis Resin' - this will help keep track of the contents of the capsules.

Fill as many capsules as you can and place them into the appropriate container - you will only need between 2-8 capsules to begin with but this will depend on a lot of factors so you can store the extra capsules for later trips.

If you have never capsuled anything before, then do it over the sink, remember the plant material is used as a dye and can stain. It is fiddly so make sure your hands and fingers are dry and you simply scrape the empty capsule through the powder to fill it. You only need to fill the main part of the capsule and then push the end cap on, just make sure you fill each capsule the same so you can manage the dosage.

Cover the container and store it in a cool place, ready for the day you intend to have the DMT journey.

Note: This method produces a much higher concentration of DMT within the capsules.

Method 1: Capsulating raw plant material

Sourcing Material
Once you have started down the path of DMT and you believe you are ready, it is surprising how easy and seamless the whole process can be, from sourcing material to a DMT journey. The first thing you need to do is source the material, which is as easy as searching on eBay, making a purchase and waiting a few days or a week for it to arrive.

The recommended plant material to purchase is the inner root bark of Mimosa Hostilis - (you can also use Acacia Confusa)

Basically you will not know if you end up with the inner root bark, outer root bark or bark from the stem, but the inner bark root contains the highest concentration of DMT.

Based on DMT Nexus research, DMT concentrations for Mimosa Hostilis include:
~ Inner root bark 1%
~ outer root bark 0.3%
~ stem bark 0.03%

This can cause problems with dosage, because you will not know how much you need to ingest in order to achieve a successful DMT journey until after the first time you use the plant. You can then adjust the dosage accordingly

When searching for Minosa you will often come across Mimosa dyes and incense, it is because the plant material is used to dye materials and can also be burnt as an incense. You only need to purchase about 100grams to begin with as this will give you plenty of material.

Processing Mimosa Hostilis Bark Root (MHRB)
The important part of taking DMT, no matter the method, is to get as much DMT into the blood stream as possible in one go. This method covers preparing MHRB for capsulating, which you will ingest for the DMT journey.

The method outlined below is the simplest and involves powdering the inner bark root and then filling capsules:

After blending, remove any fibrous material (make sure you store it for later) and keep the remaining plant material for grinding.

2. Grinding
To aid the digestion process, you need to powder the material, so ideally use a mortar & pestle to grind the plant material. It will take some time, but is well worth the effort because it not only produces a better yield of DMT from the digestion process, but you can control the dosage better and it also focuses your mind on your intentions – so it helps connect you by going through the process.
Once you start seeing the powder, strain it into a container. You will need to repeat this a number of times in order to get enough powder (left over plant material should be kept for later).

The next thing you should do is find a container and label it with 'Mimosa Hostilis' - this will help keep track of the contents of the capsules.

Fill about 20 capsules and place them into the appropriate container - you will only need between 2-8 capsules to begin with but this will depend on a lot of factors so you can store the extra capsules for later trips.

Cover the container and store it in a cool place, ready for the day you intend to have the DMT journey – it is helpful to capsule the day before or the morning of the journey so you remain focused.

Note: Keep all your waste plan material as it can be used in another method, which involves to capsulating the plant resin.

DMT and the Law

The LAW
If a psychedelic compound can completely shatter our perception of reality, then it could induce psychosis or psychotic episodes in people that require hospitalisation – thereby further straining the healthcare system. Additionally, there is a lack of research and knowledge on the exact mechanisms by which DMT acts on the brain, which is a contributor to DMT being classed as a drug and therefore controlled.

In the case of DMT, in a number of countries it is illegal to extract it, possess it, use it and sell it.

However, possession of a plant that contains DMT is legal, mainly because nearly every plant contains it so it is not possible to control, although it may be illegal to possess some species of plants, specially those known to contain high levels of DMT.

As an example of plants that cannot be controlled, the Australian national floral emblem is called “Acacia pycnantha”, commonly known as the Golden Wattle, which contains small traces of DMT throughout the plant, ~ 0.4%. While other acacia species like “Acacia aneura” can contain between 2-6% of DMT in the dried leaves. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Acacia_species_known_to_contain_psychoactive_alkaloids

If the plant is not illegal then it is your decision as to whether you should ingest that plant material, but don't be fooled by thinking you can start having ceremonies. These types of ceremonies may be illegal due to safety concerns.

Note: Check the local laws within your own country or state in order to ensure you are not breaking them.

What is DMT?

Ever since the vocal presence of Terence McKenna and over 20 years worth of his work with psychedelic compounds, including the extraordinary research of Dr Rick Strassman on near-death and mystical experiences, published in his book: DMT – The Spirit Molecule, there has been an influx of people stepping outside their comfort zone and trying psychedelic compounds in an attempt to gain insights that help them understand more about life and answer fundamental questions relating to existence and reality.

One such compound is and alkaloid called N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT), which in its own right has some very unique properties. DMT is a rather simple molecule and builds on a core compound called tryptamine (similar to serotonin and melatonin), it is considered the most powerful psychedelic known to man by Terence McKenna (well beyond psilocybin or MDMA) and what sets it apart from all other psychedelic compounds is that it exists naturally within the human brain, including most plants and mammals according to Dr Rick Strassman. Additionally, there is no conclusive evidence detailing where it is produced within the human brain, although research suggests the pineal gland is responsible. There is also little research to indicate the circumstances that lead to DMT production within the human brain, but theories exist describing its use within the dream state and when we are born and possibly when we die. Ongoing research into DMT will help further unlock the mysteries that surround this chemical compound (https://www.cottonwoodresearch.org/).

DMT may also have some influence in the formation of connections between synapses within the brain (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EDYctenkgJo), and the focus of meditation to achieve enlightenment may likely be directly linked to DMT. After all, DMT is just a catalyst to something more profound that cannot yet be defined or explained.

DMT in is extracted form, resembles a crystal formation that is pale in colour. The chemical compound is very stable and can quite easily be extracted from a variety of plant materials.

DMT in its raw form is mostly smoked through vaporizing the crystals, but it can also be dissolved and injected or capsulated and ingested.

Due to the legal issues associated with extracting, possessing and selling DMT, no further information will be provided. The focus of information will be constrained to plant materials that contain DMT.

It is common knowledge though research conducted by Dr Rick Strassman and others, while DMT  exists within the human brain, it also exists with a large number of plant species and animals. There has been quite a bit of research conducted on a variety of plants in order to identify the percentage of DMT they contain.

These investigations are partly due to the use of specific plant species found within the Amazon rainforest that are used as part of Shamanic rituals for thousands of years. These rituals are based on drinking a brew made from plant material that contains primarily DMT and another chemical compound called monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), while also containing a large number of other unknown chemical compounds. You can read more about MAO's in other articles.

The Shamanic rituals are often commonly referred to as an Ayahuasca journey, where the name Ayahuasca is the name given to the brew that is ingested.

One of the core plants that contain DMT which is used within Ayahuasca is called Mimosa Hostilis and is known to contain large quantities of DMT within the inner root bark. This material is often referred to as MHRB - "Mimosa Hostilis Root Bark".

MHRB is relatively easy to obtain and prepare for a DMT journey and as it also contains a large percentage of DMT, therefore it will be the focus for most of the articles.
